When I was younger each year my family went beach camping. While we enjoyed the sun and epic surf, my sister and I made it a strange tradition where we would haul our air mattresses down to the beach and race each other to see who could get to the beach first or pull off the coolest moves. Sometimes, we would catch better waves then the surfers or just totally cut them off…Then Yesterday happen!
At Makaha Beach Park, while the waves could not have been more perfect. I got to ride a C4 SUPSQUATCH! I know that sounds a little extreme but its true. Supsquatching, is basically Air Mattresses surfing on steroids! For the first time ever in the history of the Buffalo Big Board Surfing Contest , they held a segment in the tournament for a 7 man team Supsquatch contest. It was the most fun I ever had I wish I could do that everyday for the rest of my life.
comment →I have motivated myself to go on bike rides every chance I have and wander to some place I have never been before. I pump up my tires, press play on the 90′s Pandora station on my phone, and make sure my camera is ready for anything unexpectedly beautiful to happen. My goal is to not have a goal. I go where ever my feet peddle me too. My destination is always a surprise!
While I wandered left of my house at around 4:30pm, I peddled my way across the river I just did a stand up paddle in earlier that week. When the bike path I took decided to end, I wasn’t ready to turn around, so I took some random street as my next get away and wandered into an opening to some secret beach! There I found, cotton candy sunsets a cement platform perfect for a little photo opt, and a turtle as big as a suitcase! I have to say, life at that moment couldn’t have gotten any better. All by myself, I just wished I had someone to share that with, because It was one of those inklings in time when you realize what life is all about…

Today, I went stand up paddle boarding down the river that curves under the famous Hale’iwa rainbow bridge. This is a great place to get a feel for what Hawaii is really all about. There were tons of fish swimming underneath our boards and we even ran into a few turtles along the way. Willi, the founder of Coconut Adventures, gave us a few pointers on how to paddle up the river the easiest and also how to surf into waves. (that was my favorite part) I love paddle boarding because you don’t realize you just had a massive worked out, until your on the beach craving a smoothie afterwards like me! Its fun, easy to learn, and family friendly. What more can you ask for?
If your ever on the North Shore of Oahu and want to get a taste and tour of the real hawaii, I really recommend getting a tour from the best. Coconut Adventures Hawaii are local SUP instructors who know the island very well and can give you some great stories about the North Shore and the rest of Oahu. Coconut Adventures makes paddling on the North Shore fun and safe as well.
I’m wearing my new reto, 80′s, board shorts from VANS, that I am in love with because they fit so well and I hate when my butt shows when I wear just a bikini while SUP. Plus, that highlight yellow makes it easy for people to see me when I’m in the ocean surfing or swimming!
Thats me paddling up the river on a C4 paddle board, you can’t see it very well but I am wearing my “I love surfers” Roxy shirt
This weekend I did a stand-up paddle “C4” boarding session up the river here on the North Shore of Oahu. In order to get to this particular stream, you have to paddle across a massive bay, with some good size waves, to get to the entrance of the river. There is pretty gnarly bridge that separates the bay from river and if you don’t time yourself right, you could run into the cement pillars in the water. However, its was such a beautiful paddle that it is totally worth it in the end. Once you are in the calm waterway, you just feel at one with nature… you can see all the fish swimming around the roots of the plants that grow on the edges on the river and you never lose sight of the mountain range ahead of you. About half way up, here is ever a rope swing and docks to the houses. If you ever wander to the North Shore of Oahu, rent a paddle board and take a trip up the river. Its cheap and totally family friendly!

In the morning after I get my usual latte from the Coffee Gallery in Haleiwa, sometimes I like to wander down the northern coast and do a little surf check, at what feels like the ends of the earth. This particular morning I ended up stumbling upon a cliff covered in huge boulders that over looked the shore break. I was able to balance my camera on some of the massive rocks and run to the edge in time to take a few photos with the timer on. I think I’m getting a lot better at being my own photographer. After climbing all over the rocks in my thrift-ed cowgirl boots, my secret spot started to get a little crowded with people investigating the mysterious area just like me… so I did a quick run away before anyone could ask me what I was doing! I like being mysterious myself ;)
